Chanel Monsieur de Chanel Flying Tourbillon, Meteorite Dial
In a surprising move in 2016, Chanel introduced its first watch explicitly designed for men, the Monsieur de Chanel. It was a groundbreaking timepiece for the brand as it not only targeted the male audience but also featured an in-house mechanical movement. Now, seven years later, Chanel presents a stunning new addition to the Monsieur de Chanel collection - a flying tourbillon model that exudes sublime elegance.
The watch boasts a dark and brooding aesthetic, achieved through a combination of matte black ceramic and a dark-grey meteorite dial. The 42mm round case, constructed with highly resistant black ceramic and complemented by a steel bezel, crown, and caseback, offers captivating views from both sides. The concept of "extreme circularity" defines the watch, with circular shapes prevalent in every aspect of the dial and movement.
The meteorite dial, crafted from a sliver of grey striated meteorite, features cut-out sections that reveal glimpses of the gear train and the mesmerizing tourbillon escapement. The only non-circular cut-out exposes parts of the keyless work of the crown. Dominating the dial are two intersecting black rings, forming an inverted figure-eight. The larger ring indicates the hours and minutes, while the smaller ring represents the seconds on the tourbillon. The Arabic numerals on the top ring are reminiscent of the font used in the jumping hours model, and the hands are filled with black lacquer.
The transparent well housing the flying tourbillon consists of two matte black rings. The outer ring displays the seconds, while the inner ring rotates in synchronization with the 60-second tourbillon and features a white triangle pointer to indicate the seconds. Complementing its contemporary and dark allure, the watch is presented on a black nylon strap with a black calfskin trim and lining, secured by a steel triple-folding clasp.
Flipping the watch reveals a captivating view of the manual-winding movement meticulously designed and assembled by the Chanel manufacture. While Chanel has partnerships with large-scale movement manufacturers, such as Kenissi and F.P. Journe, the Monsieur Tourbillon features a modified version of the Calibre 5.1 movement developed with indie watchmaker Romain Gauthier. The movement, equipped with a flying tourbillon, offers a three-day power reserve and showcases sweeping circular shapes, including an anthracite circular bridge. Chanel's signature lion's head also makes an appearance beside the escapement.
With its exquisite craftsmanship, elegant design, and remarkable movement, the Monsieur de Chanel Tourbillon represents a remarkable achievement in the world of luxury watches, captivating watch enthusiasts and collectors alike.
