IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40, inspired by Gérald Genta
This year in Watches & Wonders, IWC revived the Ingenieur, drawing inspiration from the vintage SL reference created by Gérald Genta. Unlike a traditional reissue, these new Ingenieur models skillfully blend heritage with modernity. The steel Ingenieur models come with pattern dials in white, black, or green blue, reminiscent of the Aquanaut and in line with the current trend of integrated bracelet sports watches.
In addition to the steel models, IWC also unveiled a striking titanium version. This release flew under the radar until the show, featuring a grey dial and a dark grey-tinted titanium case and H-link bracelet. The sandblasted finish adds texture and sets it apart from the integrated steel sports watch category. The use of titanium, which is 45% lighter than steel, gives the watch a distinctive appearance, aligning it with modern aesthetics. With redesigned crown guards and bezel screws inspired by Genta's SL design, this 40mm timepiece houses the caliber 32111 movement, offers 120 hours of power reserve, and provides 100m water resistance.
Combining the Ingenieur's Genta heritage with contemporary design elements, such as the checkerboard dial and modern IWC logo, this watch pays homage to its history while maintaining a modern identity. The brand's strategic move to reposition the Ingenieur range demonstrates a clear statement, leaving the future of the model open to speculation but undoubtedly marking a new chapter for this iconic watch.
