IWC Pilot's Watch, Full Luminous Dial
IWC introduces a new addition to its U.S. Naval aviator squadron watch series, the Pilot's Watch Automatic 41 Black Aces, in collaboration with the Strike Fighter Squadron 41 (VFA-41), known as the "Black Aces." This watch, available exclusively online, marks a significant departure for IWC's pilot watch collection, featuring a fully luminous dial and matching hands.
The watch maintains the familiar 41mm case size and uses the hacking seconds caliber 32100, similar to the 41mm Top Gun model. What sets it apart is the captivating dial. IWC uses SuperLumiNova pigments combined with a durable binder, forming a solid disc with exceptional luminosity. This disc is then affixed to the soft-iron dial, and black printing is applied. IWC claims that the dial will emit a greenish glow for over 23 hours.
While the luminous dial and ceramic case make this timepiece intriguing, some enthusiasts may find the "Black Aces" squadron patch emblem on the dial distracting. IWC has a history of collaborating with various U.S. Navy squadrons, and the choice to incorporate squadron insignia might not resonate with all watch enthusiasts. Many might prefer the iconic Top Gun logo instead.
The "Black Aces" squadron recently designed their own custom Mk. XVIII pilot's watch, which was delivered earlier in the year. This unique connection between the squadron and IWC likely played a role in inspiring this luminous dial variation. It's a nod to the squadron's identity and its collaboration with IWC.
