IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XX, Mark Collection 75th Anniversary

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of its iconic Mark series, IWC Schaffhausen has introduced a refreshed version of the Pilot's Watch Mark XX, featuring a stunning silver-plated dial. This new execution retains the classic design elements of the Mark series while incorporating subtle enhancements for improved legibility and aesthetic appeal. The black numerals and indices, as well as the triangular index at 12 o'clock, have been slightly reworked to provide enhanced contrast against the dial. These elements are also coated with luminescent material to ensure excellent readability in all lighting conditions. Additionally, a discreet date window has been integrated at the 3 o'clock position.

Encased in a 40-mm stainless steel case, the Mark XX showcases a re-engineered profile and refined lug geometry, resulting in an improved overall design. The polished bezel has been slimmed down to offer a more subtle appearance, allowing the dial to take center stage with its exceptional visibility. As is customary for the collection, the watch is water-resistant up to 100 meters and features a specially secured front glass that remains intact even during sudden pressure changes while flying. These features exemplify the Mark XX's enduring legacy as a reliable pilot's watch that exudes understated elegance.

Powering the Mark XX is the self-winding IWC-manufactured 32111 movement. This caliber boasts an antimagnetic silicon escapement and a double pawl winding system, ensuring optimal performance and a remarkable five-day power reserve. The movement operates behind a closed case back, maintaining the watch's sleek aesthetic.

The Mark XX pays homage to its predecessor, the legendary Mark 11, which was developed by IWC for the British Royal Air Force in 1948. The Mark 11 featured an 89 caliber housed within a soft-iron inner case to protect it from magnetic fields. Its design prioritized perfect legibility with a high-contrast dial and luminescent elements, enabling easy time reading in limited visibility conditions. This functional and easily readable cockpit instrument design has remained a defining characteristic of IWC Pilot's Watches throughout the years. While advancements in navigation technology made the Mark 11's role as an astronomical navigation tool obsolete, it continued to serve as a crucial backup instrument for pilots in various Commonwealth countries well into the 1980s.
